In response to an emergency request from the South Carolina Department of Transportation, FDH Velocitel’s heavy civil division (HVC) has mobilized a field crew to the state to evaluate at least 4 bridges along I-95 affected by recent flooding. On October 4, SCDOT closed nearly a 70-mile stretch of I-95 due to a number of flooded sections along the interstate.
FDHV has been asked to evaluate the concrete piles of these bridges (between mile markers 119 and 132) and to identify those that are scour critical.
Due to strong water currents, SCDOT is providing the equipment necessary to give the FDHV crew access to the bridges. Field technicians will conduct the pile tests using the firm’s proprietary nondestructive test (NDT) methods.
FDHV will provide SCDOT with initial results on the bridges within the first 24 hours. SCDOT will use the results to aid in decision making about when to open various sections of the interstate affected by flooding.
