Concrete Characterization Study for the U.S. Army

The U.S. Army contracted with FDH and its partners to assess the feasibility of developing a portable, nondestructive concrete characterization system to support U.S. Army operations. Test block construction and data collection were performed by FDH’s research and development group, while data collection was done by senior signal analysts. An institutional partner’s electrical engineering department provided modeling and simulation of the concrete test blocks and was able to fill in data for block sizes not built and blocks not fully cured within the direction of this project. A consultant partner was responsible for development of signal processing algorithms. The combined findings were reported, which evaluated the effectiveness of coupling commercially-available NDT technologies with custom-designed software algorithms to estimate relevant structural parameters for reinforced concrete structures.
